CROCHET FOR
CHARITY
Please
continue to pray for the victims of The links below are provided as a service to those still interested in providing help and comfort to the hurricane survivors. Some of the links are old and may no longer work. As always, you should investigate a charity effort (or any effort) carefully before investing time and/or money in it.
My family evacuated Aug. 28, 2005 from the path of Hurricane Katrina. I was able to return September 7, having power but no phone, television or Internet. Within days, I had all these. In much of the New Orleans and surrounding area it will be a long time before they have these simple things which we took for granted for so long. We were very blessed to have escaped with no loss of life and minimal property damage. Update: Our roof has been replaced and most repairs have been made to our fence and other areas. My prayers and thoughts go out to those who lost loved ones in the storm, to those who are now without homes or possessions. There is much work to be done, but this too shall pass in time and we will go on. New Orleans will be a different city perhaps, but it will stand. Since Katrina, we've had a few other storms raise havoc in this area. Of course, Rita right after Katrina and Gustav in 2008. We did evacuate for Gustav (as it turned out we were still in the path of the storm and were without electricity at our evacuation location). We returned home to no electricity or running water. My son left for Army Basic Training Sept. 8, shortly after we returned home. We replaced our living room carpet which was ruined by something that leaked from our freezer we think. Waiting to see what this year's storms bring...

For those in a hurry, I recommend checking out I know there are many places accepting donations
and/or items on behalf of the victims of this terrible disaster. I urge
you to be careful that you put your money into a legitimate effort to
make sure funds are used as you intend them to be. Additionally, but along the same vein, domain names
have been registered using the word "katrina" so folks would be misled
into visiting them. Three that have been deemed suspicious by the state
of Arizona include katrinahelp.com, katrinacleanup.com, and
katrinarelief.com.

I've gathered together some information both for victims
and for those who want to help. I have concentrated on
Louisiana as that
is my area, but there is a section for folks in Texas, thanks to a link
from
Crochet with Dee.
I am listing the following as resources but do not have
personal experience with these organizations unless noted. I present
them to you as an option you might investigate.

Special Note. The information
below was taken from the
AIP web site and
is current as of Sunday, September 11. The article gives great
suggestions for wise giving. Note that other charities may certainly be
legitimate. This is only a starting point for you.
American Institute of Philanthropy, a leading charity
watchdog that issues letter grade (A to F) ratings of nonprofit groups,
identifies the following relief charities, which are providing aid to the
victims. These charities have received an “A” or “B” grade based on the
portion of their budget going to program services and their fundraising
efficiency.

Matthew 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' 37 "Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' 40 "The King will reply, `I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' 41 "Then he will say to those on his left, `Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' 44 "They also will answer, `Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' 45 "He will reply, `I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' 46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
