Crochet Dictionary

This page will take a long time to load. My apologies for that. I could have used thumbnails but that would have been a major pain for you all since there is a picture for each definition. If you want to print this page, I suggest setting your printer to landscape, rather than portrait. It will be more pages but you should get all the table.

BLO Back Loop Only		insert hook into the back loop of your stitch
Bobble		This is a number of stitches worked in one stitch. yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 2 loops (4 loops on hook) to complete stitch yo, pull through all 4 loops (including the one on hook), work a chain (yo and pull through) to close it up at the top Your bobble can be larger than this if the pattern specifies it
BPdc back post double crochet		yo, insert hook from back to front around post of next st, yo and pull up a loop even with last st worked and complete dc
ch chain		Slip the yarn over your hook and pull through the loop on your hook
chevron		A chevron, to my way of thinking, is just a ripple - that is not official. I think of a chevron as a mild ripple as opposed to a deep ripple Here is a rainbow chevron at Lion Brand See Ripple for more information
cl cluster		1) yo, insert hook in stitch, yo and pull through the stitch you just entered but not through the loops on the hook, then yo and draw through 2 loops on hook. At this point you have two loops remaining 2) yo, insert hook in the same st, yo and pull through the stitch you entered but not through the loops, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook. Now you have 3 loops remaining 3) yo, insert hook in same st, yo and pull through the stitch you entered but not through the loops, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook. You have 4 loops remaining 4) yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook.

crab stitch	See reverse sc
cro-hook		This is a double-ended crochet hook - a hook on each end. I have an aluminum one and I have a wooden one. The stitch worked is basically an afghan stitch worked from both ends (you turn your work). See the instructions at the sites on my links page.
dtr or dbl tr double triple or double treble		yo 3 times, insert hook into top two loops of stitch (unless otherwise specified), yo, pull through stitch (5 lps on hk), (yo, pull through 2 lps) 4 times
dc double crochet		yo, insert hook into top two loops of stitch (unless otherwise specified), yo, pull through stitch, yo, pull through 2 lps yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.
dc2tog or dc dec double crochet 2 together or double crochet dec	see decrease chart
dbl lk double love knot		pull loop out a bit so it's longer than a normal chain, yo, pull through as in making a chain 1, sc in back knob on loop just made, repeat above to make it a double love knot
dec decrease	see decrease chart
dnt do not turn	Obviously means not to turn your work.	Continue without turning your work such as when working on a square, circle or on both sides of your foundation chain.
dsc double single crochet (same as esc)	part of the extended stitch family	insert hk in stitch or space, yo and pull through (2lps on hk), yo, draw through one lp (2 lps still on hk), yo and draw through last 2 lps on hk
Elmore Stitches (see extended stitches - esc, edc etc) also called double single stitch	see individual stitches
extended stitches (half-step stitches, Elmore stitches)	see individual stitches
ex sc or esc extended single crochet (knotted single crochet, locked single crochet, double single crochet)	Helen asked me about a knotted single crochet, also called a locked single crochet. I didn't know what it was. Turns out it is this - the extended single crochet	Insert hook into stitch or space where you want to put your esc, yo and pull through (2 lps on hk). yo, pull through one loop (2 lps on hk), yo, pull through two loops
ex dc or edc extended double crochet		yo, insert hook into stitch, yo, pull through stitch (3 lps on hk), yo, pull through 1 loop, (still have 3 lps on hk) yo, pull through 2 lps, (2 lps on hk), yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.

FLO front loop only		insert hook into the front loop of your stitch
FPdc front post double crochet		yo, insert hook from front to back around post of next st, yo and pull up a loop even with last st worked, and complete dc
fo finish off or finished object		To finish off - complete the final stitch, yo and pull through and tighten to finish
