To increase is simply to work two stitches in one.

On occasion you will need to increase more than one stitch. Your pattern will tell you how and where to make your increases in this instance.

Single Crochet (sc)

To increase one stitch at the beginning of a row in single crochet, work two stitches into the first stitch of the row.

The arrow points to the last stitch in the first single crochet row.

This picture shows two stitches worked into the first stitch.

To increase one stitch at the end of the row in single crochet, work two stitches into the last stitch of the row.

The arrow points to the last stitch in this row.

Here are two stitches worked into last row. This picture actually shows two increases, one at the beginning and one at the end.

Half Double Crochet (hdc)

To work an increase in hdc at the beginning of a row, work a hdc in the first stitch, rather than the second stitch. This will add a stitch to the row since you normally go into the second stitch.

To work a hdc increase at the end of the row, place two stitches into the turning chain.

Double Crochet (dc) and Triple/Treble Crochet (tr)

To increase one stitch at the beginning of the row in double crochet, work a double crochet into the first stitch of the row. Remember that normally you start in the second stitch of the row because the chain-3 counts as the first stitch of each row.

Here is a video demo.

You would work a triple crochet increase in the same manner as the double crochet increase, except you would make a triple crochet.
