Increase of Basic Stitches
update c2004 Sandra Petit, http://www.crochetcabana.com

Single Crochet (SC)

To increase one stitch at the beginning of a row in single crochet, work two stitches into the first stitch of the row.

Figure 1

arrow points to first stitch

Figure 2

Fig 2 shows two stitches worked into first stitch

Another option would be to skip the first stitch and work into the second stitch. Since you normally work single crochet into the first stitch, this would effectively cause a decrease, but you would have a hole there where you skipped.

To increase one stitch at the end of the row in single crochet,
work two stitches into the last stitch of the row.

Figure 3

Arrow shows the last stitch on this row (Fig. 3)

Figure 4

Here are two stitches worked into last row. Figure 4 actually shows two increases, one at the beginning and one at the end.

Half-Double Crochet (HDC)

To work an increase in hdc at the beginning of a row, work a hdc in the first stitch, rather than the second stitch. This will add a stitch to the row since you normally go into the second stitch.

To work a hdc increase at the end of the row, place two stitches into the turning chain

Double Crochet (DC)

To increase one stitch at the beginning of the row in double crochet, work a double crochet into the first stitch of the row. Remember that normally you start in the second stitch of the row because the chain-3 counts as the first stitch of each row. For the triple crochet, do the same. Work a triple crochet into the first stitch of the row.

Figure 5

work row 1 of dc and chain 3, turn

Figure 6

work dc in FIRST stitch for the increase

To increase one stitch at the end of a double crochet row, work two stitches into the top chain of the turning chain.

Figure 7

Figure 7 shows one stitch left on the second row of double crochet

Figure 8

Figure 8 shows 2 double crochets worked into the final turning chain from previous row

Triple Crochet (TR)

You would work a triple crochet increase in the same manner as the double crochet increase except you would make a triple crochet.

On occasion you will need to increase more than one stitch.
Your pattern will tell you how and where to make your increases in this instance.
