Wordlessghans

Rule

These afghans were made from the same pattern yet look different as they have different color schemes. :-)  The pattern is called Restful Rainbows and was designed by Jan Hatfield. It is a very simple pattern, but makes a beautiful afghan. You can find the pattern on p. 112 in the book Mile a Minute Afghans published by Leisure Arts and Oxmoor House, copyright 1996. I have written to them but could not get permission to share the pattern, so please do not askJust for your additional information, note that they also said that items created from their designs may be sold occasionally, as a hobbyist, but may not be used to make items to be sold commercially, as in a business.  The book uses different colors than the ones featured here.

This would be a great afghan to use up leftover yarns as you could do each stripe in a different color. It's a very simple pattern, though it makes a beautiful afghan!

Here is a close-up picture of the stripe. The actual stripe is simple double crochets. The border around the stripes make the design.

This is the same pattern, but done in different colors.
I made this one as a wedding gift for Lynn and Caleb.

I also work this pattern to make what I call the "wordless afghans". The colors are based on the wordless book and the bracelet, which is used to share the gospel message. When I became a born again Christian, I thought this idea was such a clever way to introduce the gospel, especially to children!

Gold represents the golden streets and glory of heaven, where we will spend eternity with Christ if we believe in Him. God wants everyone to go to heaven.
In the Bible it says: “Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Revelations 2:10

But some of us can’t get to heaven because of our sin, represented by Black, which separates us from God. In the Bible it says: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

Red is for the Blood of Jesus shed on the cross for us.
In the Bible it says: “...while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Rom 5:8b

When we ask Jesus to forgive our sins and come into our hearts, our sins are washed away. We are White as snow.
In the Bible it says: "...the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin." 1 John 1:7b

Blue represents baptism, being immersed in water to show our "death" and "resurrection" in Christ. Baptism does not save you, but we do it to follow Jesus’ example.
In the Bible it says: "
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John." Matthew 3:13

Green is for all growing things.  It represents growth as we study God's Word and become mature Christians. We can grow in the Lord by reading our Bible, praying, and attending church services.
In the Bible it says: "
Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18a

Some people like to add purple to their books. Purple represents royalty. Jesus is our Lord and King.

I have also made small doll afghans (about 13") using this idea and different patterns. I attach a little card noting the briefly tells each color means. This is a great project to use for outreach. A youth group might get together to make them and give out during some event or as a fundraiser. Since they cost little to make, you can give them away or sell them cheaply and provide a service and outreach at the same time.

I have a little blanket,
I love to hold it tight;
For hidden in its colored stripes
Is a great delight.

Each color holds a piece, you see,
Of a story dear and true;
And because I love it so,
I'm sharing it with you!

GOLD is for the precious gold
With which the streets are paved,
In Heaven above, where all will go,
If sure they have been saved.

But saved from what, you may well ask,
That too, my colors tell;
BLACK is for our stain of sin,
For which we merit Hell.

But with the next bright color comes
A message that brings joy.
RED, the blood of Christ, was shed,
For every girl and boy!

His blood will cover all our sins,
And wash us WHITE as snow;
If we will just have faith in Him,
And that, we all should know.

BLUE is for our baptism,
A sign of new belief,
To show to the entire world
We're turning a new leaf.

Last of all, we come to
GREEN,
The color of things growing,
As each of us shall grow in Christ,
His glory overflowing.

Now you know the gospel truth
My blanket's here to share,
About the Christ who died for us,
Our sin and shame to bare.

And if you want to hear some more,
The story more complete,
All the teachers here at school
Think telling it's a treat!

Here are a few pictures of wordless preemie or doll afghans that I have completed.  Using 8 oz skeins, you can get about 18 out of one skein of each color, using various patterns. It takes approximately 2.5 ozs. of each color.

straight dc rows (chain 42 and work 4 rows each color). (See Wordless DC Afghan)

 V-stitch pattern. (See Wordless V-stitch)

Front Cross Stitch (see Wordless FCS)

This one is the straight box stitch (see Wordless Straight Box Stitch).
