These afghans were made from the same pattern yet look different as they have different color schemes. :-) The pattern is called Restful Rainbows and was designed by Jan Hatfield. It is a very simple pattern, but makes a beautiful afghan. You can find the pattern on p. 112 in the book Mile a Minute Afghans published by Leisure Arts and Oxmoor House, copyright 1996. I have written to them but could not get permission to share the pattern, so please do not ask. Just for your additional information, note that they also said that items created from their designs may be sold occasionally, as a hobbyist, but may not be used to make items to be sold commercially, as in a business. The book uses different colors than the ones featured here. This would be a great afghan to use up leftover yarns as you could do each stripe in a different color. It's a very simple pattern, though it makes a beautiful afghan! Here is a close-up picture of the stripe. The actual stripe is simple double crochets. The border around the stripes make the design. **** I also work this pattern to make what I call the "wordless afghans". The colors are based on the wordless book and the bracelet, which is used to share the gospel message. When I became a born again Christian, I thought this idea was such a clever way to introduce the gospel, especially to children!
Gold represents the
golden streets and glory of heaven, where we will spend eternity with Christ
if we believe in Him. God wants everyone to go
to heaven.
Red
is for the Blood of Jesus shed on the cross for us. When we ask Jesus to forgive our
sins and come into our hearts, our sins are washed away. We are
White
as snow.
Blue represents baptism,
being immersed in water to show our "death" and "resurrection" in Christ.
Baptism does not save you, but we do it to follow Jesus’ example.
Green
is for all growing things. It
represents growth as we study God's Word and become mature
Christians. We can grow in the Lord by reading our
Bible, praying, and attending church services. Some people like to add purple to their books. Purple represents royalty. Jesus is our Lord and King.
*** I have also made small doll afghans (about 13") using this idea and different patterns. I attach a little card noting the briefly tells each color means. This is a great project to use for outreach. A youth group might get together to make them and give out during some event or as a fundraiser. Since they cost little to make, you can give them away or sell them cheaply and provide a service and outreach at the same time.
