The Reversible Granny Square

Most granny squares are meant to be worked on the "right" side, without turning. However, some people like to turn their grannies, thus making them "reversible" in a sense. This may also help if you are having a problem with your granny lying flat. Sometimes just that little bit of difference will help.

ch 1, hdc in top chain of beginning ch-2 or 3

ch 2 or 3 (whatever you did before - keep it consistent) to bring to height

turn work so the back is now the front

add 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc (or whatever granny pattern you prefer) for your corner

continue as in the regular granny square pattern, working four corners of
(3dc, ch 3, 3 dc)

sc in top chain of beginning chain2 or 3 - this gives more space for your shell

chain 2 or 3 for height

turn work again, so that you are now back to your original front

2 dc in same space to make your first shell of that side and continue on as in a regular granny square
