JOINING ROUNDS ON A GRANNY SQUARE
c2006 Sandra Petit, http://www.crochetcabana.com

Basic instructions for making a granny square on on the How to Make a Granny Square page. This page is to give you some variety. It's to show you that there are different ways of accomplishing the same task.

There are at least four different ways to begin a granny (or any project worked in the round).

  1. Make a slip knot, ch 5 and join with a slip stitch working first round into the ring (as shown in the other tutorial)

  2. Use the alternative to the slip knot, ch 5, and join with a slst as in method 1 (see video below)

  3. Start with an adjustable ring

  4. Make a slip knot, ch 5 and work your first round into the first chain

It doesn’t matter which way you use, but if you are making squares you are going to join together, it might be a good idea to use the same method for all of them, just for continuity sake.

ROUND ONE

Once you have a ring, you work round one of your granny.

Round 1: Chain-3, yo, make 2 dc in ring, (ch 3, 3dc in ring) 3 times

Now you have choices as to how you will join this round.

Method 1 join: slip stitch in top chain of beginning ch3, then slip stitch in next two dc and in next ch-3 space, work succeeding rounds in same manner

Method 2 join: join first round with a dc, join succeeding rounds with a sc or hdc

Method 3 join: ch 1, hdc in top chain of beginning ch 3, then work first shell of next round in same space. Complete second shell of the first corner at the end of the round. Succeeding round are joined in the same way.

1) First, the original method shown in the tutorial is to join with a slip stitch

chain 3,

Insert hook into top chain of your beginning chain

yo and pull through stitch and loop on hook (slip stitch joining complete)

2) Another method is to join the first round with a dc and the succeeding rounds with a sc or hdc.

work your first corner of Round 2 around the dc you just made
note that a corner is (shell, ch 3, shell)

ROUND TWO

Succeeding rounds will be joined with single crochet (or hdc if you prefer).
Work the second round of your granny square

Rnd 2: wk (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, shell) (first corner),
ch 1, in next ch-3 sp wk (shell, ch 3, shell) (2nd corner),
ch 1, in next ch-3 sp wk (shell, ch3, shell) (3rd corner),
ch 1, in next ch-3 sp wk (shell, ch3, shell) (4th corner)
join with a sc to top of beg ch-3 as shown below.

insert hook in top chain of beginning chains

work a single crochet in that stitch

work first shell of round 3 around the sc you just made - note that you are now working a side, not a corner

succeeding rounds will be worked in the same way, joining rounds with a sc (or hdc if you prefer)

3) Still another method is to work a (ch 1, hdc) for the join and then work only one of the corner shells in that spot. Work the rest of the round and then the final corner shell, joining the last shell to the first shell with a ch-3 and either a slip stitch or the invisible finish off

yo, insert hook in
 top chain of beginning chains

yo again

draw through all 3 loops to completed hdc

work first shell of round 2 around your hdc

continue your round working (shell, ch 1) along sides and (shell, ch 3, shell) in corners

when you get to the last full corner,
ch 1

now you have to finish the first corner by working the final shell

then join as you did before, working a chain 1, then a hdc in top chain of your beginning chains

the first shell of round 3 will be worked around the hdc, just as in the previous round

Only one thing left to do. Finish off. You can two choices on how to do this. You can finish by joining with a slip stitch or by using the Invisible Finish Off.

IFO - Yarn over and pull yarn completely through loop on hook. Tighten. Sew any loose strands in as demonstrated in Those Pesky Ends.

Now that you have the basics down, you may want to try making a square using different colors for each round. I have detailed instructions on how to change colors in a granny square on a different page.

Once you have crocheted the number of grannies you need for your afghan, placemat, lapghan, shawl, scarf or whatever...you will want to join those squares. Go to Joining Squares. There are pictures to help you out.

Thanks for spending some time with me, this tutorial, and, of course, the chocolate aisle. :-)  May all your days be full of happy crocheting! Don't forget to remember those less fortunate and share your skills by doing a bit for charity too!
