Lacy Granny Joining
c2005 Sandra Petit, http://www.crochetcabana.com

This is the joining I used on my pattern Lacy Granny. The text below is copied from my pattern. Note that there is a round of sc, ch 3 before working this border. Check out the pattern round 15 for details.

I like to do this with both squares on the floor (with me sitting there too) as I find it easier to handle the large squares and not to miss any stitches. Of course, you can do it anyway and anywhere you like.

(Note: If you are joining as you go, just sl st in ch-3 space of corner of left square and continue as per instructions).

Place two squares side by side, right sides on top. Attach green in any corner of the square on your left with a slip stitch.

holding yarn on top and towards the unworked section ch 2, insert hk into ch-3 corner sp of square on your right (not pictured) and complete a slip stitch.

chain 2, then move back to square on the left,

sl st in next ch-3 sp of square on left, ch 2,

move back to the square on the right and sl st into the ch-3 of that square, ch 2

Continue to go back and forth from one side to the other, always keeping your yarn at the unworked section.

slip stitch in the ch-3 loop, ch 2, then go over to the other side, inserting hook in the next ch-3 loop on that side for the sl st.

Be careful not to skip any loops.

If you don't come out even, then there is an error somewhere. Your shells should be across from one another so pay attention as you go along.

The picture above shows inserting hook to make a slip stitch in square on left.

This one shows inserting hook to make a slip stitch in square on right.

You will finish up by working the slip stitch on the right-hand square and then finishing off as normal.

You don't have to do the invisible finish off as you be working either a join or a border along this side later.

Below is a picture of the completed joining of two squares. Isn't it pretty? I got the beginnings of this idea from the basic joining info page at About.com. Sandi Marshall is a great resource for crochet there, but this page didn't give much detail. Since I wanted to have a wide, pretty joining, I took it a step further, adding a round in my joining color, as well as the ch-3 round to give it a lacy look IMHO.

Once you have your squares joined into three strips of four squares, you are ready to join the strips. You will do this in the same manner you joined the squares. When you get to the place where you joined your squares, it will be different from the rest. Be especially careful that you continue the "square" part at the right place and your shells remain across from one another. This does take some concentration. Try not to have too big a hole space at your square joining part. If, however, when you're done, you look back at it and find a larger hole than you like, you can close that hole up a little when you sew in your ends.
