Here is a video demonstrating the Single Crochet. After the video is the text tutorial.

The single crochet (sc) is placed in the 2nd chain from your hook in the foundation chain.

Fig. 1 - arrow points to the second chain from hook

I've already done one row of single crochet on the previous page as I showed how to go into the foundation chain. Now we're going to do a second row of single crochet and I will explain how to make the actual single crochet stitch.

Fig. 2 - chain one (ch-1)

Chain one (ch-1) to bring your first stitch up to the height of the rest of your row.
You do not count the turning chain (your ch-1) as a stitch, nor do you make a stitch into it
.

Turn piece so that you are looking at the back of the first row of sc as in Fig. 3.

Fig. 3

Insert hook into first stitch, under top two loops. Yarn over (yo), bringing yarn from back to front (over and around hook)

Fig. 4

Pull yarn toward you through the stitch. Now you have two loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through both loops on hook to complete the single crochet (sc).

Fig. 5

You have completed one single crochet (sc). Figure 5 shows a row with one stitch left to make. Sometimes it is difficult to tell where that last stitch is. In this case, we started with a foundation chain of 8, which means we will have 7 single crochets in each row. If you're unsure if you've reached the end of a row, count your stitches. In single crochet, you will always have one less than the number in your foundation chain.

Fig. 6

Figure 6 shows the last stitch on this row completed. You may think there is another stitch to do there, but there is not. You can be sure by counting the stitches on your row, which should equal one less than your beginning chain.

Added note: Some patterns will tell you to go into the front or back loop only.
Here's what they mean -

Now, what's that about double crochet? Go on to  The Daring Double
